Daniel Bobroff, Head of Retail at HTEC Group: How Technology Will Shape the Future of Retail

Daniel Bobroff, Head of Retail at HTEC Group, on the transformation of retail accelerated by the pandemic, his long and extensive experience in this field, and HTEC Group as a rising star and innovation enabler.

I think it is interesting to see overall the difference between those that have grasped this nettle many years previously, and those who have become laggards, and I guess what the laggards realized over the last months is that there’s actually no going back…the new experiences of many shoppers who have historically shunned digital technologies, is that they’ve learned a new way of being. They’ve seen that online wasn’t that difficult, was actually quite convenient, and actually they had no choice, because they couldn’t go to the stores anymore, and those habits will last for quite some time.”

Daniel Bobroff, Head of Retail at HTEC Group

We are moving on with the brand-new Fast Forward episode where our Niko Slavnic had a pleasure to discuss topics related to retail, global trends, the impact of the pandemic and collaboration with HTEC Group with Daniel Bobroff, Head of Retail for HTEC.

About the Speaker

Acknowledged as one of the world’s leading retail technology experts and speakers, Daniel delivers keynote talks worldwide on the digitization of retail and the ever-changing customer experience. His unusual journey includes being the pioneer of in-game advertising (“Selling Mario to the admen”), the first digital advertising channel, which is now estimated to represent a marketplace of over $10bn worldwide. He developed numerous hit video game franchises, achieving retail sales of over 50 million units, and has a unique perspective on the move to experiential retail that is sought by many of the world’s best-known retailers, agencies and brands. Daniel was also the founder of Coded Futures, a creative technology advisory firm focused on the future of retail, and the co-founder and former Investment Director of ASOS Ventures, the company’s VC division. He has spent over three decades as an innovator, entrepreneur, advisor and investor, and is currently the Head of Retail at the HTEC Group and Head of Business Development for the UK.

Listen to the podcast to hear his amazing story. You will learn more about:

  • His early interest in computer gaming and how it opened doors to the world of retail while he still was an advertising media planner
  • The synergy between advertising and video gaming
  • His journey with video game development
  • His experience and key role in working with and identifying the digital future for ASOS
  • The emergence of FashionTech
  • The retailer’s next battleground: for building digital experience
  • The urgency for digitalization, accelerated by the pandemic
  • Micro-influencers as a growing trend in retail
  • HTEC Group as a stellar team that he joined because he recognized their potential and determination to make revolutionary impact with innovative solutions

Daniel explains that this new digital age has given rise to an untold number of niches inside retail.

“While we once lived in the world of restricted supply where there were gatekeepers, today’s shopper has access to anything literally at the click of the button. And that unlimited supply has given rise to essentially untold niches, and those niches have within them their own communities. Now you are able to express yourself through those niches, and the retailer’s position has changed quite dramatically…”

He points out that one of the trends that will, in his opinion, make an impact on retail and advertising in the future is the shift from influencers to micro-influencers.

Finally, he shares a few words about what sets HTEC apart from other players in the market:

“All of the innovation comes from its culture – we’re in this together, we are a team. I would say that, together with strong leadership, is why I have every confidence in its success. It remains the case that HTEC is crafting a new path for what previously was understood as being an outsourcer… HTEC is different. It assumes responsibility from start to end, it’s there with you in the trenches and it’s there to pick up any problems when they emerge.”
