About the project
In-home entertainment is on a constant upswing, and television technology is advancing alongside it. In order to provide an even better TV viewing experience to its users, a leading cable TV integrator approached HTEC to design and develop an OTT solution for web and iOS/Android-based devices. This solution encompasses everything from live TV streaming to catch-up viewing, VOD TV, and multi-screen viewing all the way to billing support.
Challenge
On a mission to make the television viewing experience even more enjoyable, our client sought a solution that would vastly enhance multimedia distribution and management, no matter the platform. The client also required a rapid time to market and seamless integration with popular cable operator providers.

Solution
In just eight months, HTEC’s experts created and delivered the first version of a hybrid OTT/IPTV to the client, leaving plenty of time for additional improvements and customization. The solution not only supports VOD (Video On Demand) and scheduled recording, but it also provides an intuitive admin panel so that users can have more control over content, subscription packages, and overall user settings. This includes integration of a finance model, easing the billing and payment processes and supporting both prepaid and postpaid billing models.
The fully featured TV headend supports video ingestion, transcoding, and transrating capabilities. In addition, multi-language audio track and subtitle support allows viewers to enjoy quality TV programming no matter which language(s) they speak.
Backend analytics and reporting were provided, as well. The modular architecture supports rapid service scaling and failover. In the meantime, decoupled subsystem architecture utilizes asynchronous message brokers, synchronous communication using RESTful, and a cluster of open-source load balancers and reverse proxies for Live TV and VOD streaming, interservice transport, scaling, failover, and SSL/TLS termination points.

HTEC created a solution following rapid time-to-market needs that enables live TV, catch-up TV & time-shift streaming.
Our client can now support a wide variety of end-user viewing devices with multi-screen streaming and server-side VCR functions, bolstered by prepaid and postpaid billing models. The platform allows easy integration on most popular cable operator TV headends, which positively influences the number of users and boosts the client’s business. It has found success across several regional cable TV and OTT operators.
