Case Study: Building the Next Generation of Television  – Live TV, Catch-Up TV, Time-Shift Streaming

About the project

Demand for in-home entertainment is on a constant upswing, and television technology is advancing alongside it. To provide an even better TV viewing experience to its users, a leading cable TV integrator approached HTEC to design and develop an OTT (over-the-top) solution for web and iOS/Android-based devices. This platform encompasses live TV streaming, catch-up TV and VOD (Video on Demand), multi-screen viewing, and profile and billing management.

Challenge

On a mission to make the television viewing experience even more enjoyable, our client sought a solution that would vastly enhance multimedia distribution and management, no matter the viewing device or platform. The client also required an accelerated time-to-market and seamless integration with popular cable operators to ensure market competitiveness.

“Unwinding in front of the television after a long day is a big part of many of our lives. It’s a time to spend together as a family when the weather is not ideal, and it’s a way to explore the vast world around us from the comfort of our homes. Partnering with our client to make this experience even more entertaining and user-friendly has allowed us to shape the future of media & entertainment consumption. Engineering a better future, one step at a time.”

Solution

In just eight months, the team from HTEC created and delivered the first version of a hybrid OTT/IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) to the client, leaving plenty of time for pre-launch improvements and customization. The solution not only supports VOD and scheduled recording, but it also provides an intuitive admin panel, so users have more control over their content, subscription packages, and system settings. This includes the integration of a finance module, easing billing and payment processes and supporting both prepaid and post-paid billing methods.

The fully featured TV headend supports video ingestion, transcoding, and transrating capabilities. In addition, multi-language audio track and subtitle support allows viewers to enjoy quality TV programming no matter which language(s) they speak.

Backend analytics and reporting were provided as baseline functionality, as well. The modular primary system architecture supports rapid service scaling and failover, while a decoupled subsystem architecture uses asynchronous message brokers, synchronous communication using RESTful, and a cluster of load balancers and reverse proxies for Live TV and VOD streaming, interservice transport, scaling, failover, and SSL/TLS (Secure Socket Layer/Transport Layer Security) termination points.

Success

HTEC quickly scaled a world-class team with the skill and domain expertise needed to create a highly technical and premium engineered solution while addressing the client’s need for a rapid time-to-market.

By getting to market faster with a comprehensive platform, our client can now offer users a premium media & entertainment experience while protecting their competitive edge. By allowing easy integration with most popular cable operator TV headends, the solution has found success with several cable TV and OTT operators, which positively influences the number of users on the platform and boosts the client’s business.
